Family system and individual child correlates of sibling behavior.

Abstract: In this study of the connections between marital adjustment and sibling behavior, the best predictor of younger siblings ' prosocial behavior was fo und to be low interparental conflict. Older siblings ' prosocial behavior was most associated with the mothers ' marital adjustment. Yo unger siblings ' agonistic behavior was related to marital adjustment and to the older children 's activity level.

“…Mothers' and fathers' reports of marital satisfaction and lower interparental conflict have been found to be associated with lower levels of observed sibling conflict contemporaneously, lower sibling negativity reported by older siblings one year later (Brody et al 1992), and more positive sibling relations longitudinally as reported by both older and younger siblings (e.g., Brody et al 1994a). Similar results have been reported whereby younger siblings' prosocial behaviors were best predicted by low parental conflict, while older siblings' prosocial behaviors were predicted by mothers' ratings of more positive marital relationships (Brody et al 1987).…”

“…The results of the present study supported the hypothesized relations between maternal regulating behaviors and sibling behavior, as predicted by the findings of the previous studies (Brody, Stoneman, & Burke, 1987b). Significant correlations were found between maternal distraction and conflictual negative behaviors of the children.…”

“…This complex system of relationships is critical for understanding the development of siblings when one child has a disability [Stoneman, 1993[Stoneman, , 1995Stoneman and Brody, 1993b]. Marital dissatisfaction and parental conflict can compromise the quality of the sibling relationship [Brody et al, 1987b[Brody et al, , 1994aCase and Corley, 1991;Jenkins, 1992;Erel et al, 1998;Stocker and Youngbade, 1999]. Nixon and Cummings [1999] found that siblings of children with disabilities may be especially sensitive to family conflict, reporting more negative emotional reactions and a greater tendency to perceive personal involvement in the conflict than comparison siblings.…”
