Objective: Caring for the disabled elderly is a source of stress for family caregivers, and the lack of social support and the pressure of social exclusion might aggravate family caregiver burden. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between caring load and family caregivers’ burden, as well as the mediating effects of social support and social exclusion.Methods: Data used in this study derived from the nationally representative database of aged population in China, and 3125 households with family caregivers for the home-bound disabled elderly were eventually selected into this analysis. Regression methods and mediation analysis methods were employed in this study.Results: The results indicated that there was a significant positive association between caring load and the caregiver burden, and specifically, social support intensity (rather than social support breadth) and passive social exclusion (rather than active social exclusion) played partial mediating effects. Furthermore, the contributions of mediating effects of social support intensity and passive social exclusion were 13-15% and 27%-29%, respectively, and the total contribution of mediating effects was about 35%-38%.Conclusion: Family caregivers’ burden should be paid more attention in the large population with rapidly aging speed like China, and more guidance services as well as support should be provided to family caregivers. In addition, it is crucial to focus on the social support and social exclusion in community in the public policy innovation.

Influence of Ideological and Political Education on Improving the Subjective Well-Being of College Students

The subjective well-being of college students is important to their growth and development. This paper aims to verify whether and how ideological and political (I&P) education promotes the subjective well-being of college students. First, the concept of the I&P education and the features of subjective well-being were introduced. Then, a survey was carried out in China Youth University of Political Studies to evaluate the current status of subjective well-being of college students. The results show that most college students are happy; among them, females, freshmen and liberal arts students are happier than their respective counterparts. Next, a comparative experiment was carried out among the respondents with the experimental group receiving the I&P education and the control group not receiving the I&P education. Through the analysis of the experimental results, it is concluded that the I&P education can effectively improve the subjective well-being of college students. The research results provide a good reference for the growth and development of college students.

Research on the relation between family and happiness has focused on the micro level and considered the effects of an individual's place in the family system, such as whether or not one is married and exchange of support with kin. Macro level differences in the family system as such have received little attention as yet. In this paper we consider regional differences in family types in Europe and explore the relationship with average happiness. Data on dominant family type in regions are taken from Todd (1990), who distinguishes five family types: 1) absolute nuclear; 2) egalitarian nuclear; 3) communitarian; 4) stem family; and 5) incomplete stem family. Data on average happiness in regions are taken from the Eurobarometer surveys. Average happiness appears to be highest in regions where family pattern of "absolute nuclear" prevails and lowest in the regions where "egalitarian nuclear" family dominates. Control for economic prosperity in regions does not change this picture. A possible interpretation of these findings is that freedom adds more to happiness than equality does. It is not true for types of freedom. If horizontal freedom (intragenerational freedom) seems to be important in terms of well-being, the results are much less convincing as far as vertical freedom (intergenerational freedom) is concerned. The findings might have some far reach contribution in the field of family policy.
