This study is based on a description of Indonesian family profile data as reflected in the results of the Inter-Census Population Survey (2015) which shows that Indonesian families are not that severe or vulnerable. In 2016, there were actually fewer married couples than in 2013. but increased slightly until 2018. On the other hand, the number of divorces continues to increase. This means that the number of families separating due to divorce in Indonesia is increasing. Divorce data shows that more and more families experience shocks to their family ties every year. More than 400,000 families experienced this shock in 2018. This is a very serious issue and must be addressed immediately. The most common cause of divorce was long-term arguments or arguments (44,8%), followed by financial problems (27,17%), domestic separation (17,55%), domestic violence (2,15%), and consumer lifestyle Alcohol (0,85%). Therefore, this research is a cultural study using semiotic analysis (semiotics), that is, the study of symbols in social life, that is, the study of how symbols are generated and used in society. The result of this research is to provide the target community with cultural symbols and signs that represent the values that memayu hayuning bawana adhere to and still practice in their lives. In conclusion, the cultural values of memayu hayuning bawana are effective in strengthening the resilience of Javanese families

Measuring Family Resilience: Evaluating the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire

With a continued focus by practitioners, such as marriage and family counselors, behavioral/social scientists, and policy makers, on promoting resilience among families, it is important to ensure that reliable and valid instruments exist to accurately measure resilience. Using a sample of 603 college students from a large, public university in a mid-South U.S. state, this study investigated the measurement of family resilience operationalized by Walsh (the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire [WFRQ]) based on the three-domain theoretical framework. Item-level analysis was conducted to examine reliability followed by a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to examine construct validity and confirm the proposed three-factor structure of family resilience. Item-level analysis was examined through individual item mean scores and bivariate correlations, and the CFA was evaluated through examination of model fit and significance of pathways between factors and individual items. Results from the item analysis indicated that individuals reported that the proposed family resilience items characterized how their families rebounded from stressful events. Results from the CFA upheld the theorized three-factor structure comprised of (1) belief systems, (2) organization patterns, and (3) communication/problem-solving. Altogether, these findings demonstrate the suitability of the WFRQ and provide practitioners and scholars alike a more holistic insight into resilience beyond the individual level.

Combining Family Systems Approaches to Address BIPOC Families’ Racial Trauma Amidst the Global Pandemic

The ACE study ( Felitti et al., 1998 ) led to the recognition of the prevalence and impact of trauma. However, since the ACE study sample was mostly white and middle class, the Philadelphia task force implemented their own study to account for trauma of a more diverse sample. A result of the study was a list of evidence-based treatments to be utilized with BIPOC populations. Of the evidence-based treatments was, ecosystemic structural family therapy (ESFT). A similar effective approach is the family resilience framework. When combined, the approaches can be effective with BIPOC families during the global pandemic and racial trauma, something not typically at the forefront of family counseling goals. In this article, I explain the four steps family counselors should follow when combining the approaches to better approach and treat racial trauma while also partaking in effective advocacy to enhance family resilience of BIPOC families. A case study is provided for family counselors to understand how to effectively utilize this combined approach.
