“…However, the gifted member felt that siblings and parents held more negative affect than they actually did. This finding supports Ballering and Koch's (1984) results, and indicates that the gifted and talented hold more negative affect or are more cynical about their family relationships than are other family members. Perhaps they do this as a defense against being &dquo;different.&dquo; It is important to note that although some theoretical and clinical observations have commented on parental concerns over the family relationships of the gifted, only Hackney (1981) has empirically validated those concerns.…”

“…The emotional bond between a first-born child and the father was strongest when the child had a high relative IQ and weakest when the lQs of the two siblings were equal. Ballering and Koch (1984), however, found that relationships between parents and their children were affected less by the gifted label than were those between siblings. Nongifted siblings generally reported their family interactions in more positive terms than did the gifted.…”

“…The quality of relationships appear to relate to birth order and sex of the gifted child (Pfouts, 1980). Ballering and Koch (1984) report that giftedness affects sibling relationships even more than parent-child relationships, and that gifted children perceive less positive affect in their relationships with siblings, gifted or nongifted, than do nongifted siblings. Apparently, parents of gifted children become concerned about sibling relationships as early as the preschool years (Karnes et al, 1984), although it is not clear that the gifted child actually experiences social problems this early.…”

“…Los trabajos publicados basados en la influencia que ejercen los hijos con altas capacidades son escasos, como así lo manifiestan Ballering y Koch (1983), pero describen muy bien los cambios que se observan en el entorno familiar.…”
