Family Quality of Life Perceived by Mothers of Children with ASD and ADHD

Abstract: Existing research has compared Family Quality of Life (FQOL) in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) populations and typically developing populations but has not yet explored differences in FQOL across ASD, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and comorbid ASD and ADHD populations (ASD + ADHD). In the present study, 117 North American mothers of 92 sons and 25 daughters (ages 6–11) with ASD, ADHD, or ASD + ADHD completed an online survey exploring FQOL. “…Parents of children with ASD reported a moderate level of satisfaction with FQoL, as indicated by mean total scores ranging from 3 (fair) to 4 (more satisfied) at both waves 1 and 2, using a 5-point Likert scale. Previous studies reported similar satisfaction scores among children the ASD and those with developmental delay (3.59 at baseline, 3.69 at 1 year after intervention) using the same scale (Chiu et al, 2020;Lei & Kantor, 2022;Romaniuk et al, 2022). This study showed a significant increase in overall FQoL satisfaction and specific domain scores, including family interaction, parenting, and disability-related services, 1 year after diagnosis, and it is an exciting result.…”

“…This insight also opens up an avenue for further research to explore why fathers feel this way and how their experiences and expectations of FQOL differ from other family members. As there is a justifiable focus on mothers in many studies in the literature (for example, [ 34 , 35 , 36 ]), such understanding can contribute to more effective family support programs, ensuring that all members, including fathers, receive the appropriate resources and assistance to enhance their overall quality of life.…”

“…Studies that investigated an impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on FQOL among parents of children with SEND documented deteriorated emotional well-being and dissatisfaction with provision of disabilityrelated support to their children (Chan and Fung, 2022;Romaniuk et al, 2022). On the other hand, Bolbocean et al (2022) found no statistically significant differences in FQOL in families of children with autism and intellectual disability between the time periods before and during the first year of the pandemic, indicating family resilience due to other factors, such as positive parent-child relationships.…”
