Background: The care of critically ill patients is a strong indicator of service quality provided in the emergency department. Since families are the major social support sources, assessing the family members’ needs may reduce their anxiety and depression owing to the acute situation of their loved ones while improving the patients’ recovery. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the expectations and needs of relatives of critically ill patients to formulate solutions to improve the quality of emergency department service. Methods: We conducted a prospective, cross-sectional survey of 873 relatives of nontraumatic, critically ill patients who completed the Turkish version of the Critical Care Family Needs Inventory in the emergency department of a university hospital in Turkey. The needs statements were evaluated under five subheadings: meaning, proximity, communication, comfort, and support. Results: In total, 249 (28.5%) participants were females and 624 (71.5%) were males (mean age, 41.79 years). The “meaning” category was given the highest priority, followed by “communication,” with average points of 3.75 and 3.57, respectively. The most important needs were being informed regularly about the patient’s condition and being assured that the patient is under the best possible care, whereas personal, physical, and emotional needs were the least important. Conclusion: Relatives of critically ill patients primarily focus on the quality of patients’ care. Creating a positive rapport based on trust and providing a healthcare environment where the expectations and needs of relatives are met should be prioritized by emergency department physicians, nurses, and other staff while caring for critically ill patients.

Introduction: A life-threatening illness can cause the involvement of family members and the imposition of psychological and physical stress on them. Certainly, the family is a very valuable resource in patient care and plays an important role in maintaining the emotional support and patient’s recovery. The aim of this study was to explain the family members’ supporting behaviors of the patient admitted to the cardiac special units. Methods: This qualitative study was performed in the cardiac special units in Isfahan. The number of participants was 20, including 5 nurses, 8 family members, and 7 patients. The data were collected through interview and observation by purposive sampling. Then, the data were analyzed by Graneheim and Lundman’s qualitative content analysis method. The study lasted 12 months. Results: Data analysis showed that family’s support can be classified into three levels, including support by the therapeutic alliance (attempts to console and reassure, restoration of selfesteem, diminishing patient’s insensitivity, commitment to the patient, and visiting the patient ), participatory information (obtaining reliable information from the nurse, active role in providing meaningful information about the patient’s prognosis), practical and instrumental support (searching for economic support resources, providing the patient with the necessary equipment, trying to do the right care taking into account the family culture). Conclusion: Understanding family’s supportive behaviors can help improve counseling and planning for quality care of patients admitted to the cardiac care units (CCUs).

The patient's condition and the environment of the Emergency Installation (ER) that are unique can affect the psychological condition of the patient's family. This causes the emergence of psychological problems in the patient's family, such as anxiety, stress, and depression, these problems can affect the role of the family as a supporting system of patients in the process of handling actions while in the ER. These problems can be minimized by fulfilling family needs while in the ER to accompany the patient. The purpose of this study is to find out the description of the patient's family needs in the emergency room. This research is a descriptive quantitative study with a survey approach, with the research instrument in the form of a CCFNI-ED questionnaire. Respondents numbered 96 patient families obtained through convenience sampling techniques. The results of this study indicate that family needs which according to the family are important to fulfill are communication needs followed by understandable needs, support needs, comfort needs and needs close to the patient. Communication needs are considered the most important needs needed by the patient's family while in the emergency room. This research is expected to be a source of reference for the nursing profession in meeting family needs while in the emergency room, so it is expected to increase the family's role in healing patients.
