Abstract: This study draws on institutional theory to explore the relationship between family involvement, governmental connections, and initial public offering (IPO) underpricing in China. We explore these relationships using a sample of 577 manufacturing firms listed on the small and medium enterprises board of the Shenzhen Stock Exchange over a 10-year period (2004-2014). “…A central tenet of BAM is that family firms' decisions depend on the reference point of decision‐makers, aiming to preserve or increase their SEW endowment (Cennamo et al, 2012; Samara et al, 2018; Swab et al, 2020). The SEW framework is effective in explaining how family involvement affects firms' decisions in both developed countries (Cennamo et al, 2012; Samara et al, 2018) and emerging markets (Jiao et al, 2021; Yang et al, 2020), as non‐financial priorities of SEW prevail in both contexts (Swab et al, 2020).…”

“…In China, Yang, Ma, and Doty (2020), discussed two forms of CSR: the first one is on family-owned SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprise) with emphasis on local reputation. The second form of CSR is in the corporate, which are mostly governmental organizations, demonstrating global and national societal expectations.…”

“…A contribution in an international context is made when the established theoretical relationships do not hold when we expect that they should, or when they hold when we expect that they should not (and these unexpected outcomes can be explained by the authors). For example, Yang et al (2020) studied the initial public offering (IPO) underpricing phenomena of family firms within China. They argue that the Chinese stock market is characterized by frequent rule changes, fewer professional managers, and relatively uninformed individual investors.…”
