Abstract. Formal psychotherapy in Ghana is gaining momentum. Concerns about the over-reliance on Western theories bring the suitability of associated clinical interventions into question for Ghanaian, non-Western clients. We interviewed 27 clinical practitioners (including clinical, counseling, and health psychologists) practicing in an urban setting to explore cultural challenges they faced and to identify cultural adaptations they made in their practice. Our participants reported navigating cultural barriers to therapy such as potential clients seeing therapy as an unfamiliar resource, resistance due to mental illness stigma, linguistic barriers, and hierarchical and age norms associated with help-seeking. Our sample identified attention to the following as routine in clinical practice: charismatic Christian and African cosmological worldviews, cultural expectations of helping and interdependence, and family involvement in “individual” therapy sessions. The findings have implications for future psychotherapy practice and training in Ghana and similar Low and Middle Income Country (LMIC) contexts, as well as for clinical work with African immigrants.

Formar-se cómo terapeuta familiar induce a pensar en procesos de intervención con las familias, pero también consigo mismo. En este sentido, el objetivo del estudio se centró en identificar aprendizajes significativos desde el ser, hacer y saber de terapeutas en formación, durante el curso de entrenamiento, adscrito a la Especialización en Terapia Familiar de la Universidad Católica Luis Amigó. En sintonía con estos intereses, la investigación fue de corte cualitativo, al habilitar contextos interpretativos de experiencias vinculadas al proceso formativo; al respecto, la organización, sistematización y análisis de información estuvo mediada por el método de análisis de contenido (AC); metodología que busca trascender lo subjetivo a procesos de objetivación, mediante el uso de técnicas e instrumentos, como la entrevista a profundidad. Acorde con los resultados, se encontró que los aprendizajes de los estudiantes están estrechamente vinculados con el ser, hacer y saber, como meta-aprendizajes para la vida. El estudio concluye que el proceso de formación de terapeutas familiares induce ineludiblemente a una perspectiva holística de la realidad personal, familiar y social, que conjuga aprendizajes significativos, vistos como puntos de partida para confrontar y evaluar procesos de transformación, mediatizados por la autoreflexividad y la confrontación personal y familiar, que van más allá de las teorías formativas. Implementation of the McMaster Model in Family Therapy: Effects on Family Function in Married Couples

Objective: Family function is one of the main effective factors on stability of the family. Family therapy can promote family function and performances. This study aimed to assess the effects of family therapy on family function among couples in Yazd province (Iran) based on the McMaster model. Method: The research population was selected from volunteer couples in Yazd in 2017 who were invited by publicity announcement to participate in this research. Finally, 40 couples were selected and randomly divided into 2 intervention and control groups. Participants responded to the demographic and Family Assessment Device (FAD) questionnaires. The obtained information was investigated using inferential and descriptive statistics and SPSS 21 software. Results: The results showed significant differences between the intervention and control groups in problem-solving (p = 0.01), communication (p < 0.0001), emotional responsiveness (p = 0.01), emotional involvement (p < 0.0001), and general function (p = 0.04). The roles and behavior control domains were improved after the intervention in 2 groups, but the differences were not significant. Conclusion: Family therapy based on McMaster model can promote the skills of problem- solving, family communication, emotional responsiveness, emotional involvement, and general function in couples. Healthy family functioning is an important domain of interest for mental health professionals who provide family interventions. Our findings add substantially to family professionals’ knowledge about patterns of family function in Iranian families.
