Family Impact of Assistive Technology Scale: Development of a Measurement Scale for Parents of Children with Complex Communication Needs

Abstract: Young people use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems to meet their everyday communication needs. However, the successful integration of an AAC system into a child's life requires strong commitment and continuous support from parents and other family members. This article describes the development and evaluation of the Family Impact of Assistive Technology Scale for AAC Systems - a parent-report questionnaire intended to detect the impact of AAC systems on the lives of children with complex… Show more

“…The test-retest reliability levels reported here are similar to those reported for original FIATS [49] and the FIATS-AAC-a companion parent-report measure of child and family functioning for face-to-face rather than written communication interventions [53]. This is the third study to estimate acceptable test-retest reliabilities for the four subscales shared with the original FIATS and FIATS-AAC measures [49,53].…”

“…Other investigators have stressed the important role families play in fostering children ' s AAC use, emphasizing the need to involve families in all stages of AAC program design, implementation, and evaluation (e.g., Delarosa et al 2012). They advocate for family-centered decision making and respect for parents ' values, expectations, beliefs, and priorities (Calculator & Black, 2010;Goldbart & Marshall, 2004;Granlund, Bj ö rck-Å kesson, Wilder, & Ylv é n, 2008;Johnson et al, 2006;Parette & Angelo, 1996;Starble, Hutchins, Favro, Prelock, & Bitner, 2005).…”

“…Two well-validated and psychometrically sound scales, the Impact on Family Scale [10] and the Family Impact Module of the PedsQL [10,11], measure family impact for children with chronic illness. There is recognition of different family impacts related to various disorders, leading to scales for specific populations, such as individuals with chronic pain [19], using assistive communication technology [20] and with emotional/behavioural problems [21].…”
