“…This finding is also consistent with previous research that income poverty is associated with food insecurity (Poppendieck 1997), parental mental health (Conger et al 1992;McLoyd 1990), and adolescents' adjustment problems (Lehman and Koerner 2002;McLoyd and Wilson 1992). For example, adolescents' awareness of family economic hardship makes adolescents feel overburdened with responsibility for their family's needs (Bassoff 1987;Lehman and Koerner 2002), and engenders adjustment problems (e.g., Bassoff 1987;Lehman and Koerner 2002). A corollary finding is that the effects of SES are mediated through food insecurity, which points to the importance of the potential ameliorating effect of food assistance programs.…”

“…This finding differs from research that recognizes the mother's second marriage as a decisive factor contributing to the children's economic situation (Morrison and Ritualno 2000). Mothers have been found to share their financial hardship with adolescent daughters (Lechman and Koerner 2002), increasing the daughters' sense of helplessness and depression. In this study, it appears that both daughters and sons were equally involved in the family's financial situation and tried to contribute to the family's income.…”

“…However, children might also suffer indirect effects when the disclosures encourage role burdens and parentification or situations in which adolescents assume too much of a parental role in the family (Alexander, 2003;Jurkovic, Thirkeild, & Morrell, 2001). Lehman and Koerner (2002) found that negative disclosures often propel children to worry about their parents. Additionally, Wallerstein (1985) noted that adolescents who serve as emotional supporters for their parents are often more worried about their parents than are adolescents who do not serve their parents in this function.…”
