Youth peer‐support is an increasingly established approach to youth work. Drawing on Wenger's theory of a ‘community of practice’, this study explored social learning processes in an Australian community‐based and peer‐led youth program for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Social learning was conceptualised as arising from processes of ‘negotiated meaning’, which Wenger described as a duality of ‘participation’ and ‘reification’. The study was designed as a qualitative field study drawing on participant observation data from weekend workshops and 16 semi‐structured interviews with young program participants. Results indicate that the program was highly conventionalised with repeated practices reifying the meaning negotiated by the participants. However, it was also open for participatory negotiation of meaning through which participants learned to recognise and share their own and others' vulnerabilities, which created a strong sense of belonging to a community of equals. The study's conception of social learning offers a novel explanation of how the youth program created and sustained alternative transformative spaces. This was done through simple, repetitive and highly conventionalised practices, brokered by peers, that allowed participants to recognise and address their own and others' vulnerabilities in new ways.

This study examines longitudinal behaviour change in six key lifestyle behaviours—sleep, physical activity (PA), sedentary recreational screen time, diet, alcohol use, and tobacco use—and associations with mental health in a large study of Australian adolescents. Change between baseline (Mage = 12.7, N = 6,639) and 3-year follow up (Mage = 15.7, N = 4445) was investigated. Generalised linear mixed effects regressions modelled associations between behaviour change and later psychological distress score adjusting for baseline behaviours, baseline psychological distress, social determinants, and school clustering. Changes over time in each of the behaviours were significantly associated with later psychological distress, whereby health-promoting behaviours were associated with reduced psychological distress and vice versa. When all behaviour changes were modelled together, significant effects remained for sleep, PA, vegetable consumption, junk food and SSB consumption, alcohol, and tobacco use. Results highlight the potential benefits of behaviour modification to reduce the progression of psychological distress in adolescence.

Purpose of Review Identify and map health, economic, and social consequences of substance abuse, especially because the impacts of substance abuse can adversely and disproportionally affect refugee youth. This scoping review was conducted to exhibit gaps in the literature on the prevalence, risk factors, consequences, and interventions of substance abuse among refugee youth to provide a better understanding of the social determinants of this public health crisis. Findings A systematic search for studies on EBSCOhost databases, MEDLINE, and Scopus retrieved 300 citations. Following a systematic screening, 10 studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings from the studies suggest the prevalence of substance abuse amongst refugee youth is exacerbated by several risk factors such as coping with pre- and post-migration experiences, accessibility and availability of substances, and socialisation with peers. Evidence shows that refugee youth suffer negative consequences because of substance abuse. However, they also show a lack of focus on interventions to mitigate the prevalence and negative consequences. Summary Literature generally suggests that the presence of substance abuse amongst refugee youth leads to negative consequences. This finding is especially concerning given the lack of knowledge about mitigation strategies and the identification of several risk factors associated with substance abuse. Therefore, increased attention must be placed on substance abuse amongst refugee youth, especially noting the rising prevalence of global refugee migration.
