Family Caregiver Satisfaction With the Nursing Home After Placement of a Relative With Dementia

Abstract: Multilevel analysis showed that primary stressors are the strongest predictors of satisfaction. Only one caregiver characteristic (work participation) and one organizational resource (rural/urban location) predict satisfaction. SCU designation was unrelated to satisfaction, perhaps because SCUs have less to offer residents in more advanced as opposed to earlier stages of Alzheimer disease. If family satisfaction is to be achieved, family presence in a nursing home needs to give caregivers a sense of positive i… Show more

“…Although placement in LTC facilities requires a shift in family caregiving, the myth that families leave their relative with dementia to 'die in isolation' has been dispelled (Friedemann, Montgomery, Rice, & Farrell, 1999;Gaugler, 2005;Maas, Swanson, Buckwalter, Lenth, & Specht, 2000;Toranatore & Grant, 2004). In reality, families seek to play an active role in the care of their relative and believe that they not only provide beneficial support to staff but also enrich the person-centred, individualised care (Bramble et al, 2009;Nolan, Bauer, & Nay, 2009).…”

“…Resident care may be optimized when communication between families and staff is consistently effective and working relationships are strong. Meaningful participation in the care of a relative living in a nursing home has been shown to improve family members' satisfaction, well-being, and experience of care (Gaugler, Andersen, Zarit, & Pearlin, 2004;Greene & Monahan, 1982;Maas et al, 2004;Penrod, Kane, & Kane, 2000;Tornatore & Grant, 2004). Nursing homes with policies that reflect a strong family orientation have been linked to positive outcomes such as family involvement and cooperative staff relationships (Friedemann, Montgomery, Maiberger, & Smith, 1997).…”
