Abstract: This article discusses the emergence and development of the historical study of the family and interprets them in the larger context of social history. It addresses the following issues: the emergence of the field of family history; household structure; developmental perspectives; kinship; the family's interaction with the process of industrialization; family strategies; and future directions in the field of family history.
