Coping strategies adopted by Iranian families of children with Down syndrome

Down syndrome (DS) is the leading cause of intellectual disability. Previous quantitative studies have examined the effects of DS on families of children with DS. This study explored the coping strategies adopted by the families of children with DS. This was a qualitative content analysis study, in which the participants were selected using purposive sampling from the families of children with DS. Semi-structured interviews were performed and collected data were analyzed. A total of 20 family members (10 mothers, 6 fathers, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters) were interviewed. Six categories were extracted in this study, namely “searching for information,” “paying attention to children's healthcare needs,” “concentration on spirituality,” “teaching socially appropriate behavioral skills,” “efforts to increase self-reliance in children,” and “development of family support circle.” The participating families were able to use positive adaptive mechanisms and cope well with the problems associated with having a child with DS. However, they still needed more support from healthcare providers and support organizations. Receiving more support from healthcare providers, such as nurses, can help them in better management of their children.

Resumo: O presente trabalho traz uma reflexão sobre o surto causado pelo Zika vírus, que atingiu a população brasileira e acabou gerando consequências não somente físicas como também emocionais para todos os envolvidos. Há um grupo particular que tem de lidar todos os dias com as dificuldades dessa nova realidade imposta: as mulheres. A abordagem desse tema parte do pressuposto da necessidade de conhecer, compreender e apreender essas questões biopsicossociais em sua amplitude e magnitude. Torna-se necessário adentrar um contexto relativamente novo que atingiu principalmente mulheres negras e pardas, pobres e com baixa escolaridade, a fim de traçar melhorias na atenção aos direitos reprodutivos e à saúde mental delas. Assim, a realidade das mulheres que tiveram filhos com diagnóstico de microcefalia em virtude do Zika vírus foi acessada. Para tanto, foi realizado um estudo de abordagem qualitativa, de cunho etnográfico, em uma instituição de referência no atendimento à saúde da mulher e da criança no Estado do Pará. Verificou-se que as mulheres nessa situação não foram ouvidas ou cuidadas, além do atendimento normatizado para um pós-parto. Concluiu-se que, apesar dessa falta, a saúde mental dessas mulheres é afetada desde o início da gravidez. Logo, os contextos familiar e social tornam-se importantes para fomentar discussões sobre as práticas de saúde e as representações que o Zika acarreta para as mulheres que tiveram sua vida alterada pela situação que provocou um grande alarme em toda a sociedade.

The research aims to know whether or not an influence of family education and social environment on the characteristics of students during the accounting lesson at class XI IPS SMA Negeri I Pati; to know whether or not an influence of social environment on the characteristics of students during the accounting lesson at class XI IPS SMA Negeri I Pati; and to know whether or not an influence between family education and social environment on the characteristics of students during the accounting lesson at class XI IPS SMA Negeri I Pati. The population in this research is 71 students of class XI SMA Negeri I Pati. Method of data analysis in this research consists of percentage descriptive analysis, descriptive statistic, prerequisite test covering normality test and linearity test, multiple linear regression analysis, classical assumption test covering multicollinearity test and heteroscedasticity test, hypothesis test covering simultaneous test (F), coefficient of simultaneous determination (R2), partial test (t), and partial determinant coefficient (r2).
