Familiar Pixels: Imag(in)ing the Dead and the Political in Israel/Palestine

Abstract: On July 2, 2014, a Palestinian teenager, Mohammed Abu Khdeir, was brutally killed. Although his murderers eventually confessed, the month following Mohammed's death was full of indecision about the crime and its perpetrators. During this period, Israeli and Palestinian publics latched onto Mohammed's selfies as intimate touchstones for comprehending who he was, what led to his death, and what subsequent action should be taken. This archive of images, however, inspired different understandings of Mohammed; amon… Show more

“…Even more than animal treatment, gender politics (e.g., the status of women and homosexuals) is a topic activists normally refrain from discussing with Palestinian counterparts. In this sense, EDI participants are similar to other Israeli solidarity activists for whom such matters are a “source of discomfort” (Weiss, 2014, 87; but see Silver [2021] on Israeli “pinkwashing”). Rather than directly addressing these topics with Palestinians, organizers ask participants to display “cultural sensitivity” when choosing how to dress ahead of certain events.…”

“…This project started from 14 September to December 2015 under the 2015 campaign. Other projects carried out by Aman Palestine include the construction of the as-Shafi'i mosque and houses of victims of war and assisting to help those who are underprivileged (Silver, 2021). The impression that the water was almost intoxicated by all the waste and the impression that the highway was in a bad state, Aman Palestine has already hit the jentolak project to destroy the ruins involved.…”

“…The proof is when the media has given good recommendations to Aman Palestine such as TV3 and TV Al-Hijrah. For example, a series of 13 slot documentaries under "Mentari Palestine" broadcast the Al-Hijrah crew's television entry into Gaza and the al-Aqsa mosque in collaboration with Aman Palestine to provide a clear picture of what is happening in Gaza to the Malaysian public (Silver, 2021).…”

“…The discipline of anthropology continues to wrestle with the legacies of such notions of racial difference, even in seemingly antiracist legacies of Boasian anthropology (Baker 2021) and its histories of silence around sexual violence (Steffen 2021). These legacies are no clearer than in the mobilization of violence to protect a white‐supremacist patrimony under threat, which proliferates in seemingly shocking ways, from hypervisible enactments of racial terror in the Israeli settler killing of Mohammed Abu Khdeir in July 2014 (Silver 2021) to the storming of the US Capitol in early January 2021.…”
