ABSTRACT. Uppermost Famennian (Strunian) brachiopods are relatively frequent in the mixed carbonate-siliciclastic succession of north-western France (Avesnois) and southern Belgium, but they remain relatively poorly known, partly due to their generally deficient preservation. In an effort to revise the material described by Dehée in the first half of the 20 th century, which were mostly recovered from the uppermost Famennian Etroeungt Formation in the Avesnois but also most probably within the underlying Epinette Formation (upper Famennian), and to assess the brachiopod diversity prior to the Hangenberg Crisis in this area, attention was mainly focused on productides (chonetidines), rhynchonellides, athyridides, spiriferides, and spiriferinides. The type specimens of Sphenospira julii (Dehée, 1929) and Prospira struniana (Gosselet, 1879) as well as other significant specimens of Centrorhynchus letiensis (Gosselet, 1879) are re-illustrated. A new spiriferide species is recognized within the Etroeungt Formation, namely Prospira pseudostruniana sp. nov. Brachiopods from contemporaneous lithostratigraphic units occurring in Belgium are also discussed.

The diversity and changing patterns of rugose corals in the Carboniferous and Permian of South China are analysed by statistical analyses of 45 families, 284 genera, and 1979 species from 14 consecutive time intervals. The ancestors of Carboniferous rugose corals originated early and underwent preliminary radiation in the late Famennian, but were eliminated by the Hangenberg global regressive event, which marks the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary. Radiation of typical Carboniferous rugose corals began in the late Tournaisian, when they were represented by an abundance of columellate taxa such as Kueichouphyllum and a significant diversification of Keyserlingophyllum. A decrease in the diversity of rugose genera occurred in the Serpukhovian, followed by a change in the composition of the rugose coral assemblages at the Mid-Carboniferous Serpukhovian-Bashkirian boundary, where large dissepimented taxa with complex axial structures disappeared. In the Bashkirian the Serpukhovian taxa were replaced by compound rugosan taxa of the Geyerophyllidae, Kepingophyllidae and Waagenophyllidae. This compositional change was associated with a global regressive event, recognized in South China by the absence of upper Serpukhovian strata in many places and by several erosional surfaces in carbonate sequences in the Lower Yangtze region. This regressive event was probably caused by an episode of glaciation in Gondwana. Subsequent transgression occurred in South China during the early Bashkirian, where a wide, uniform shallow-water platform developed in South China, on which were deposited tidal-flat dolostone and pure limestone containing compound rugose corals. Another change in the rugose coral assemblages, at the Sakmarian-Artinskian boundary, resulted in the absence from the Artinskian of representatives of typical Pennsylvanian and Early Permian families such as the Bothrophyllidae, Lithostrotionidae, Cyathopsidae, and Petalaxidae. Families uniquely typical of the Permian, characterized by Waagenophyllidae and Kepingophyllidae, dominate post-Sakmarian strata. This faunal change may be related to a major, worldwide regression, recognized at the end of the Sakmarian. Extinction of rugose corals at the end of the Permian occurred in two phases in South China. The first phase occurred at the end of the Capitanian and eliminated 47% of the families and 45% of the genera. Extrusion of the Omeishan Basalt, which is widely distributed in the western part of South China, and/or a global regression at the end of the Guadalupian could be the principal causes of this first phase of mass extinction. The second phase, which occurred at the end of the Changhsingian and is the largest extinction event in Earth's history, eliminated all remaining rugose corals.

A biostratigraphic correlation of the Devonian/Carboniferous (D/C) boundary sections from the Carnic Alps, the Graz Palaeozoic, the Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees resulted in a high-resolution record of the carbon isotopic composition of micrites (d 13 C carb ), of sedimentary organic matter (d 13 C org ) and of oxygen isotope ratios of conodont apatite (d 18 O phosph ). The studies focused on the interval between the Upper postera Zone (Late Famennian) and the sandbergi Zone (Lower Tournaisian). For the first time, weak but significant positive carbon isotope excursions in micrites and in the sedimentary organic matter is reported from the Middle and Upper expansa zones of the Carnic Alps. They coincide with a decrease in the oxygen isotope values of conodont apatite. The excursions indicate changes in the global carbon cycle during an episode of high seawater temperatures, and correlate with sedimentary change and a stepwise eustatic rise in the Rhenish Massif. High carbon isotope values were also measured in limestones from the Graz Palaeozoic in the Upper praesulcata Zone, which were previously reported from the Rhenish Massif, Carnic Alps, Montagne Noire and the North America continent. The change from a palmatolepid-polygnathid conodont biofacies to a palmatolepid-bispathodid-branmehlid biofacies in the expansa Zone in the Carnic Alps is obviously influenced by anoxic conditions and repeated transgressive phases. The protognathodids and the polygnathids start to radiate in the Upper praesulcata Zone, after the main end-Famennian extinction episode. This is connected with the disappearance of the palmatolepids, and environmental stress created by worldwide anoxic conditions, climate change and sea-level changes, stimulated the radiation of both protognathodids and the polygnathids. The regional correlation of the geochemical records as well as interpretations of these records on a global scale indicate that changes in conodont biofacies of Late Famennian-Early Tournaisian limestones were caused by a complex pattern of environmental changes.
