False-negative ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted biopsy of the breast: difference with US-detected and MRI-detected lesions

Abstract: The high false-negative result for MRI-detected lesions might arise from the difficulties in MRI-US correlation, which indicates the need for MRI-guided biopsy.

“…The high false-negative result for MRI-detected lesions might arise from the diffi culty with MRI-US correlation, which indicates the need for MRI-guided biopsy in Japan. 22 Moreover, this result shows the difficulty with the discussion about the accuracy of secondlook US. In addition, the detectability of the lesions on second-look US strongly depends on the US system, and the frequency of MRI-detected lesions is closely related to the quality of screening US.…”

“…In contrast, US-guided biopsy is performed for MRI-detected lesions in Japan. However, Sakamoto et al 22 reported that the false-negative rate of US-guided VAB for MRI-detected lesions (26%, 8/31) was significantly higher than that for US-detected lesions (3.5%, 5/144). The high false-negative result for MRI-detected lesions might arise from the diffi culty with MRI-US correlation, which indicates the need for MRI-guided biopsy in Japan.…”

“…[15][16][17][18] Among lesions with ultrasonographyehistologic discordance, 21.4% are upgraded in the pathological diagnosis after VAB, according to Li et al 19 Furthermore, it has also been reported that VAB might be valuable for definitive diagnosis when pathological results with CNB are discordant with imaging findings. [19][20][21] Accordingly, the use of VAB is supported by many physicians, especially for small lesions.…”
