False aneurysm of the common femoral vein in a footballer: Figure 1

Abstract: Traumatic false aneurysm of the femoral vein has never been reported in the English literature. The case is here reported of a footballer with a traumatic false aneurysm of the common femoral vein which was initially misdiagnosed as an arterial pseudoaneurysm. This is a very rare clinical condition, but this diagnosis should be among those considered for post-traumatic unexplained thigh pain after trauma.

“…A GSV pseudoaneurysm was misdiagnosed by MRI as posttraumatic seroma or fat necrosis in a previous case report . A common femoral vein pseudoaneurysm was also incorrectly diagnosed by MRI as haematoma resorption . In the present case, the potential diagnoses described at MRI examination included superficial arterial pseudoaneurysm, AV malformation, and subcutaneous haemangioma, but not venous pseudoaneurysm.…”

“…Normally it is caused by the interruption of arterial flow with extravasations of blood to the peripheral tissues, independent of the process that initiated it: surgery, trauma, infection, vasculitis or interventionist percutaneous procedures. The majority of cases described in the literature refer to false aneurysms in other locations such as the temporal artery, carotid artery and digital artery 3 – 5. In all of these cases the result is the formation of a fibrous capsule that spreads out in a progressive manner because of the constant arterial pressure in the area.…”
