Fall Cankerworm (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), a Native Defoliator of Broadleaved Trees and Shrubs in North America

Abstract: The fall cankerworm, Alsophila pometaria (Harris), is a species endemic to North America that feeds on broadleaf trees and shrubs. Fall cankerworm is a generalist folivore and larvae feed on a wide range of deciduous trees and smaller woody plants. Common hosts include oak, maple, cherry, ash, apple, beech, and birch. This pest is prone to repeated outbreaks over large areas, can cause extensive defoliation throughout hardwood forest stands, and can be a public nuisance in developed or highly populated areas. … Show more

“…Larva of the SPM feed on the leaves of their several host species, causing rapid and often complete defoliation. Insect defoliation is normally sub-lethal but can reduce host growth and repeated defoliation occurrences can potentially kill trees, especially when defoliation co-occurs with other disturbances such as drought that impair the carbon balance of the host trees (Conrad-Rooney et al, 2020; Dietze & Matthes, 2014).Spring cankerworm moth disturbance at Mountain Lake Biological Station NEONSpring CAK; Paleacrita vernata is a defoliator and outbreaks can cause serious damage to trees(Darr & Coyle, 2021).…”
