Fake/Bogus Conferences: Their Features and Some Subtle Ways to Differentiate Them from Real Ones

Abstract: The main objective of the present paper is to introduce some features of fake/bogus conferences and some viable approaches to differentiate them from the real ones. These fake/bogus conferences introduce themselves as international conferences, which are multidisciplinary and indexed in major scientific digital libraries. Furthermore, most of the fake/bogus conference holders offer publishing the accepted papers in ISI journals and use other techniques in their advertisement e-mails.

“…recebeu 293 convites para apresentação oral. Em geral, este convite incluía anúncios de turismo no local do congresso, linguajar lisonjeiro e um pedido de palestra sobre um artigo específico previamente publicado por ela, mas que, aparentemente, não tinha qualquer ligação com o tema do congresso 14,23 . “…Researchers eager to present their work may fall prey to conferences that either do not really happen, or are not credible. (Asadi, Rahbar, Rezvani, & Asadi, 2017) It has been stated that "open access" is the reason for the exponential growth of predatory publishers, journal, and conferences. While open access is now a popular business model, used in various ways by all types of credible publishers, it should not be conflated with the use of the internet for publication schemes that are fraudulent.…”

“…Thus it is crucial that academics have the ability to recognize the most up-to-date techniques used by predators to avoid falling into their traps. In the previous paper, most techniques which have been widely used by predators to seduce researchers to participate in the fake/bogus conferences have been discussed in detail (Asadi et al 2017). However, predators continuously mutate their techniques to persuade researchers to participate in their fake conferences.…”

“…This makes it easier for predators to take advantage of the authors. Asadi et al (2017) introduced sixteen possible signs of predatory conferences which can be helpful for researchers especially the young and inexperienced ones to differentiate these predatory conferences from the real conferences. However, this is not the end of the story since the predatory organizers frequently mutate their strategies to pretend to be a genuine scientific conference.…”
