Fairly Linear Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming Model for the Synthesis of Mass Exchange Networks

Abstract: A fairly linear optimization model for the synthesis of mass exchange networks has been developed. Superstructure, detailed modeling equations, and solutions of example problems are presented. The predominantly linear character of the model can be kept as long as single-component mass exchange network synthesis problems and packed columns as mass exchangers are considered. At the cost of introducing nonlinear constraints, the optimization model can be extended to handle multicomponent problems and staged colum… Show more

“…The task of attaining required concentrations in process streams in a cost efficient manner on the other hand is known as mass exchange network synthesis (MENS). Analogies have been drawn between these two kinds of networks in order to develop synthesis methods for MENs (El-Halwagi and Manousiouthakis, 1989;Hallale and Fraser, 2000;Szitkai et al, 2006). “…In later studies, the stage-wise superstructure proposed by Yee and Grossmann (1990a,b) has been widely used in MEN design. Chen and Hung, (2005a) and Szitkai et al (2006) respectively presented a mathematical programming approach based on the stage-wise representation of the MEN. Then, Isafiade and Fraser (2008) proposed the interval based MINLP superstructure (IBMS) on mass and regeneration network design.…”
