The objective of this study was to examine whether factors such as insertion site, patient's facial pattern, microscrew features, type of tooth movement desired, level of experience handling orthodontic microscrews and operator expertise were associated with failure of microscrews. After the approval of an ethics committee, 166 patients of one practice signed an informed consent and received 293 microscrews randomly distributed by 3 operators with different levels of practical experience and expertise in handling microscrews. The microscrews were observed in a period of 365 days or as long as orthodontic forces had to be applied and independent variables were recorded. Analysis by the chi-square test did not produce enough evidence as to allow the assertion that there was an association between the variable "failure" and the variables "maxilla" (p=0.4775), "face" (p=0.1081), "facial pattern" (p=0.7522), "microscrew length" (p=0.9113), "desired movement" (p=0.0584), and "operator" (p=0.5785). The variable "insertion side" was significantly associated with "failure" (p=0.0022). In a 365-day survival analysis, the Log Rank test yielded a p-value of 0.00178 for the curve of variable "insertion side," and showed no significant differences for other variables. With a total success rate of 87.38%, the only variable found to be significant was "insertion side" (p=0.0022), with 3.088 more likelihood of a microscrew failing if placed on the left side than on the right side. The procedure of inserting microscrews involved a rapid learning curve for an inexperienced operator, which justifies their placement by orthodontists.

Context: The use of skeletal anchorage not only changed how far teeth can be moved, but also offered more treatment options to patients and clinicians. So many orthodontists use them in severe malocclusions to save patient from orthognatic surgery and the other invasive treatment plans. So our information about them must increase to use them in a right way. Evidence Acquisition: To know recent findings about miniscrews and their use in orthodontic treatments Results: In this review article, by focusing on the newest papers published in PubMed (from 2010 -2015) we want to survey the most common applications of miniscrews in today orthodontics. To ease reading this paper, applications where divided into 7 groups. Almost all of papers used in this article had a common conclusion about safety and effectiveness of miniscrews in treatment of patients. Conclusions: miniscrews are helpful in increasing treatment options for various malocclusions and they make treatment simpler, shorter and more comfortable for patients and clinicians.

Objective: To compare the stability of splinted and non-splinted miniscrew between monocortical and bicortical anchorage techniques.Methods: Thirty-Six AbsoAnchor orthodontic miniscrews (10mm x 1.5mm) were divided into four groups; nonsplinted monocortical, non-splinted bicortical, splinted monocortical and splinted bicortical anchorage techniques. The miniscrews were inserted into sectioned bovine bone blocks and the pull-out strength for each group of miniscrews was measured using Instron 8874; a crosshead speed of 2mm/minute was applied. Six readings were taken for each group and the mean reading for each group was obtained. The data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA test with 95% confidence interval (P<0.05). Results:The pull-out strength mean of splinted group was observed to be statistically higher than non-splinted. The mean of the pull-out strength of bicortical was higher than monocortical in both splinted and non-splinted groups, however it is not significant. Conclusion:Both splinted monocortical and bicortical anchorage miniscrews were significantly stable than nonsplinted counterpart. However, in monocortical and bicortical anchorage, there was no significant difference of the pullout strength between splinted and non-splinted miniscrews.
