Field reconnaissance, geological mapping and photographic interpretation are utilized to study the failure mechanisms of July 2 catastrophic debris slide in 2017. The results suggested that the landslide was a reactivation of an ancient landslide after periods of relative dormancy, as manifestation of a retrogressive motion, which is triggered by the continuous engineering excavation as leads to rock mass unloading and decrease of mechanical properties of rock-soil mixture. The reactivated zone dominantly spread on the upper part of the ancient landslide area. The frequent tectonic movements rendered the potential landslide zone by fragmenting the structure. The fractured and fissile rock mass became further weakened by incessant rainfall that finally led to the failure of the rock mass. ARTICLE HISTORY

This paper describes a recent landslide event, which occurred at Liucheng village in Tianquan County, Sichuan Province, China, on July 15, 2018. The Laochang landslide described in this research is an outstanding and valuable reference for understanding the characteristics of such kind of landslides that are geologically similar to the landslide. The deformation characteristics of the landslide are investigated based on field investigations, drilled boreholes, and exploratory trenches. The 225 residents of 64 households living on the flat platform were threatened by the landslide. Therefore, to guarantee the safety of human life and property becomes the primary emergency task. The anti-sliding piles were taken to stabilize the landslide and mitigate impacts caused by the landslide. Based on the analysis of the monitoring data, the effectiveness of anti-sliding piles is evaluated. The results indicate that the anti-sliding piles are effective in increasing the stability of the landslide, and this work can provide a reference for similar slope engineering projects.

Underwater drilling blasting technique is often adopted to clear away the obstructed reef and dredge-cut in the mountainous waterway dredging engineering. However, the vibration of the underwater blasting and excavation of the riverbed has a certain influence on the stability of bank slopes. Combined with the partial bank collapse phenomenon in the waterway regulation project between two dams in the Three Gorges reservoir area, the change of pore water pressure of unsaturated soil under heavy rainfall and the increase of permanent displacement of soil under blasting vibration in the reservoir area are discussed. This paper explains the weakening effect of rainfall infiltration and blasting vibration on the stability of the bank slope. By studying the law of slope failure deformation under the separate action and coupling action, it is found that rainfall infiltration promotes the increase of slope permanent displacement and the blasting vibration enlarges the infiltration area of the soil, which demonstrated the accelerated failure mechanism of the rainfall-blasting slope.
