Failure Mechanism of Colluvial Landslide Influenced by the Water Level Change in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area

Abstract: The stability of the reservoir bank landslide is affected by a variety of external factors, and the fluctuation of reservoir water level is one of the important influencing factors. The Erdaohe landslide is a typically colluvial landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir area with periodic reservoir water level fluctuations. According to landslide displacement data, the displacement of the Erdaohe landslide exhibits the significantly stepwise feature. Its failure mechanism was analyzed using strength reduction me… Show more

“…Yichang is located in the junction of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River at the lower end of the Three Gorges Reservoir area (Figure 2). The famous Three Gorges Dam is built in Yichang City [46,47]. Therefore, the research on resource protection and geological disaster prevention in the Yichang area of the Yangtze River Basin has significant practical value.…”

“…The construction of hydropower stations is now one of the most efficient approaches to obtain water resources and clean energy (Tang et al, 2019;Cao et al, 2021). However, secondary geological hazards caused by the construction of hydropower station, such as reservoir landslides, can pose serious impacts on civil and transportation facilities (Manenti et al, 2018;Wang et al, 2019;Reyes-Carmona et al, 2020;Jiang et al, 2021a;Alonso et al, 2021).…”

For example, in Southwest China, around 2619 landslides have been activated by the fluctuation of reservoir water level in Three Gorges Reservoir since June 2003 (Cao et al, 2021). Among the landslide disasters mentioned above, the typical one is the Qianjiangping landslide which led to 30 m impulse wave, caused 24 casualties, destroyed 346 houses and capsized many ships (Tang et al, 2019).…”
