Failure Analysis of Shaft Circulating Water Pump (CWP) used in Power Plant

Abstract: Pump shafts are generally exposed to the liquid being pumped either on a continual basis or at certain locations along the length of the shaft. The shaft material is austenitic stainless steel, description ASTM AU 79 TY 316. The purpose of this study is to determine the failure of the water pump shaft used in the power plant. Metallography is the study of structure metal shaft can used as a means for CWP metal pelleting (Circulating Water Pump), for the purpose of damaged or deeply degraded areas. SEM test is … Show more

“…Fungsi umum WCP adalah untuk mengalirkan atau memompa air laut sebagai air pendingin yang dikontakkan dengan condenser [3]. Keberadaan WCP adalah sangat penting dalam menjaga keberlangsungan proses produksi listrik [4]. Kegagalan dalam sistem WCP akan mengakibatkan kegagalan dalam dalam produksi listrik.…”

“…If the signs of beach mark formation are not clearly visible, the fatigue crack propagation can be identified by formation of striations using SEM fractographs [15]- [16]. Meanwhile, in areas with final fractures, SEM fractographs usually exhibit dimple pattern in case of ductile fractures or chevron markings (or cleavage) pattern in case of brittle fractures [1]- [3].…”

“…In shipping, the water pump is considered the heart of the engine's cooling system. It circulates uninterruptedly the water throughout the entire cooling circuit and regulates the coolant flow rate [1]. Its working principle is based on the impeller rotation that causes the water to flow towards the periphery due to the centrifugal force generated.…”
