Failure Analysis of Retrieved Osteosynthesis Implants

Abstract: Failure of osteosynthesis implants is an intricate matter with challenging management that calls for efficient investigation and prevention. Using implant retrieval analysis combined with standard radiological examination, we evaluated the main causes for osteosynthesis implant breakdown and the relations among them for a series of cases. Twenty-one patients diagnosed with implant failure were assessed for this work. For metallurgical analysis, microscopy techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), … Show more

“…Whereas the most common reasons for the removal of orthopedic implants and osteosynthesis screws are iatogrenic and biomechanical [5], the most common cause of dental implant failure was observed to be biological. This finding is concurrent with previous research [11,16,21], given the constant exposure of dental implants to the oral microbiota.…”

“…Treatment with dental implants has become routine for partially and completely edentulous elderly patients [1], with increased use in recent years [2,3]. Such a frequent use invariably leads to a large number of failed implants, i.e., a high absolute number of failures despite the high success rates of contemporary implant systems, as also reported for orthopedic and osteosynthesis implants [4,5].…”

“…Colţea ENT Clinic used an original implantation technique of the Montgomery prosthesis that met the criteria for optimal reconstruction: refueling facility, oral method, reduced complications and mortality, period of hospitalization with lower costs [ 22 ]. In selected cases, where mandible reconstruction was needed, a multidisciplinary team of general surgeon and orthopedic surgeon was required [ 34 , 35 ].…”
