Fade statistics and propagation events at C band for two overwater, line‐of‐sight propagation paths over a 1‐year period

Abstract: We examine signal fading statistics over a 1-year period corresponding to two overwater, line-of-sight, propagation links in the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States. These links are composed of a transmitter on a tower at Parramore Island, Virginia, operating at 4.7 GHz, sending simultaneous CW signals to two receiver systems located on a lighthouse and a lookout tower on Assateague Beach, Virginia, at distances of 44 and 39 km, respectively. The receiving sites are separated by approximately 5 km. Cumulat… Show more

“…Although the experimental parameters have been given previously (by Goldhirsh and Dockery [1991] and Goldhirsh et al [1992]), we briefly present the salient characteristics here for completeness. Figure 3 and Table 3 give the overall fade distributions for the lookout tower and lighthouse links as well as the joint probability distribution for the combined 3-year database.…”

“…We address these needs through the presentation and interpretation of 3 years of attenuation and fade duration statistics for a test bed pair of C band (4.7 GHz), overwater, line-of-sight propagation links along the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States. Although results dealing with the first year have previously been examined [Goldhirsh et al, 1992[Goldhirsh et al, , 1993, we emphasize in this work the year-to-year variability and the combined statistics over a 3-year period. In a companion paper [Goldhirsh et al, this issue], we describe 3 years of meteorology associated with sustained deep fades (SDF) caused by relatively long duration extreme subrefractive events.…”
