Faculty Assessment of Emergency Medicine Resident Grit: A Multicenter Study

Abstract: Background: Assessment of trainees' competency is challenging; the predictive power of traditional evaluations is debatable especially in regard to noncognitive traits. New assessments need to be sought to better understand affective areas like personality. Grit, defined as "perseverance and passion for long-term goals," can assess aspects of personality. Grit predicts educational attainment and burnout rates in other populations and is accurate with an informant report version. Self-assessments, while useful,… Show more

“…These women have the characteristics of highly gritty and resilient people. The GRIT-S scores (4.13 ± 0.42) were higher than observed in the original study by Duckworth and Quinn (2009) on two samples of high school students 3.4 ± 0.8 (n = 279), as well as the 2005 National Spelling Bee final contestants 3.4 ± 0.8 (n =175) and four samples (total sample size n = 281) of emergency room residents (3.56 ± 0.55 to 3.63 ± 0.65) (Olson et al, 2019).…”

“…First, the self-reported data employed to examine personal traits, such as grit, may have introduced social desirability or self-serving biases ( 59 ). However, the use of reports by faculty members would also be problematic; supervisors may be unfamiliar with trainees and thus overestimate their grit level due to a lack of interaction and insufficient observation time ( 60 ). Thus, to reduce self-reporting bias, we avoided the explicit mention of grit in the questionnaire headings to prevent the respondents’ answers from being influenced.…”

“…This is interesting because we suspected that individuals with little grit might have had a different trajectory than those with lot of grit. The concept of grit has become very popular in the lay press and may be a useful concept in cognitive performance, but it is still an area of active investigation . Some research has shown that grit in emergency physicians is predictive of burnout .…”
