Facultative release from developmental constraints through polyphenism promotes adaptively flexible maturation

Abstract: The timing of maturation, a critical fitness determinant, is influenced by developmental and energetic constraints, particularly when growth is poor in adverse conditions. Such constraints can be altered through developmental plasticity.
