Facts on psychotraumatology

Abstract: Daily news is dominated by reports of traumatic events across the world. Is trauma indeed rather the norm than the exception? What are the facts? How can we better understand, prevent and treat the consequences of trauma? This past year the European Journal of Psychotraumatology (EJPT) has again tried to address these questions. With the gold Open Access model articles in the journal are being made immediately available without any barriers to access. In Europe, promising developments with regard to Open Scien… Show more

“…Fourthly, further examination of e-health interventions (e.g. Bourla, Mouchabac, El Hage, & Ferreri, 2018 ; Olff, 2015 , 2019 ) and culturally sensitive approaches to the assessment and treatment of traumatically bereaved individuals (Schnyder et al, 2016 ; Smid, Groen, de la Rie, Kooper, & Boelen, 2018 ) are paramount as well. The European Journal of Psychotraumatology looks forward to receiving more papers on mental health consequences of traumatic loss, to better meet the needs and further improve the mental health care for people dealing with mental health consequences of traumatic loss.…”

“…Another worrisome theme of the past year is the discussion on our changing climate, giving rise to a significant increase in natural disasters, uninhabitable environments, increased inequity, poverty, etc. This theme has already been addressed in previous editorials (Olff, 2017 , 2019 ) but I am really pleased that we now have call for papers on this specific theme (see details below).…”

“…Registered Reports – It is interesting to see that registered reports, that we introduced as a new submission format in 2018 (Olff, 2019 ; Spiller & Olff, 2018 ), are now coming through. Several study protocols that were submitted for peer review before starting the study (Stage 1) have now passed peer review, and have been provisionally accepted for publication.…”

“…The European Journal of Psychotraumatology started as one of the first 'specialist' full Open Access journals in its field. This was quite an adventure 10 years ago when the Journal was launched (see also Olff, 2010Olff, , 2012Olff, , 2013Olff, , 2014Olff, , 2015Olff, , 2016Olff, , 2017Olff, , 2018Olff, , 2019Olff & Bindslev, 2011) and Open Access was still novel for many. Although no other gold Open Access journal in the area of traumatic stress exists, more and more journals provide Open Access options; these are so-called 'hybrid' journalssubscription journals that offer the possibility to make an article freely available.…”

“…More transparency reduces Questionable Research Practices (QRPs, Wessel & Niemeyer, 2019 ), and moves us in the direction of Responsible Research Practices . QRPs, including for instance low statistical power, selective reporting of results, and publication bias have already led to the introduction of Registered Reports (Olff, 2019 ; Spiller & Olff, 2018 , see also Centre for Open Science ) whereby the background, hypothesis, methods and planned analyses are submitted for publication prior to beginning research, before results are known. The results of the research are then published regardless of outcome, if the researcher has followed the protocol laid out in the Registered Report.…”
