Facts, fallacies, fears, and frustrations with human pheromones

Abstract: Among primates in general, pheromones are of variable importance to social communication. Data on humans have generated the greatest controversy regarding the existence of pheromonal communication. In this review, the likelihood of pheromonal communication in humans is assessed with a discussion of chemical compounds produced by the axilla that may function as pheromones; the likelihood that the vomeronasal organ (VNO), a putative pheromone receptor organ in many other mammals, is functional in humans; and the… Show more

“…Remarkably, there is simply no peer-reviewed, bioassay evidence (of the systematic kind described in §2) that any of these four molecules is a human pheromone [5,[35][36][37][38]. Calling the molecules 'putative human pheromones', as many authors do, does not avoid the problem: they have never been shown to be human pheromones, 'putative' or otherwise.…”

“…[39,40]) to consider androstenone and/ or androstenol as human pheromones [35,37,38,41]. While pheromones do not have to be unique to a species, it does not follow that because one species uses a molecule, other unrelated species are necessarily likely to use it as a pheromone [5].…”

“…In mammals, the vomeronasal organ is generally enclosed in the vomer bone, with the sensory epithelium located on the medial wall of the organ [11]. The presence of a functional vomeronasal system in humans is dubious [12,13]. The basic anatomy of the peripheral olfactory and vomeronasal systems in frogs, snakes and rodents is illustrated in Figure 1.…”
