Factors that Influence the Individual Research Output of University Professors: The Case of Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia

Abstract: The study analyzed the factors that influence the individual research output of university professors in Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia, using multinomial logistic regression technique. Results showed that previous research publications are the main factor that explains subsequent research production. Age, academic rank, time invested on research, resource allocation, recognition, and research leaders have also a direct effect on research output. A comprehensive model is proposed and implications for universities… Show more

“…Since 2015, Ecuador has shown the highest growth in scientific production compared to the rest of Latin American countries [294]. These publications resulted from close collaboration with foreign researchers and universities that allowed them to participate in international research projects, doctorate training for Ecuadorian teachers, recruitment of foreign researchers through the Prometheus Project [23,295,296], and priority attention to areas of national interest and plans for ancestral knowledge management [294]. International collaboration has focused on Spain, the United States, and some South American countries (see Figure 8).…”

“…As a result, several researchers and practitioners have expressed an interest in investigating the factors that influence research publication in HEI (Heng, Hamid, & Khan, 2020), whereas a number of these factors have been identified including individual characteristics of the researcher, institutional factors, governance factors as well as accumulative advantage (Valdivieso, Alecchi, & Arévalo-Avecillas, 2022; Truong et al ., 2021; Niles, Schimanski, McKiernan, & Alperin, 2020). However, prior literature focused mainly in developed context with limited studies relating to the developing context (Castillo & Powell, 2020; Heng et al ., 2020; Ismayilova & Klassen, 2019).…”

“…However, most previous studies only explored these factors partially and unstructured, making it difficult to identify and analyze managerial implication. For instance, the comparative research by Valdivieso et al, (2021) conducted in several Latin American countries only reviewed individual and environmental characteristics on research performance. In the individual-level framework, Valdivieso et al, (2021) dismissed several vital variables such as competence and work motivation.…”

In the individual-level framework, Valdivieso et al, (2021) dismissed several vital variables such as competence and work motivation. In contrast, Zhao et al, (2021) only examined institutional and environmental factors but missed individual variables, which are critically important to be reviewed simultaneously.…”
