Factors that influence early breastfeeding of singletons and twins in Korea: a retrospective study

Abstract: BackgroundThis study aimed to evaluate the factors that influence breastfeeding throughout the hospital stay, including prenatal preparation, early skin-to-skin contact directly after delivery, rooming-in, feeding before the first breastfeed, time to first breastfeed, and postpartum support. This study also aimed to verify whether these factors were significant after adjusting for the mother’s characteristics, the newborn’s characteristics, and the delivery characteristics.MethodsA retrospective survey was use… Show more

“… 9 In Asian countries, rates of non-exclusive breastfeeding at 12 weeks range between 38% and 43%. 10 , 11 In this study, the rate of non-exclusive breastfeeding was 26.4% (95% CI 21.9%–31.2%), which was considerably low when compared with other settings. This might result from breastfeeding promotion, breastfeeding education being provided during antenatal visits to all pregnant/postpartum women by specialized nurses, immediate initiation of breastfeeding with skin-to-skin contact after birth in the labor room, and rooming-in routinely practiced at in our institute.…”

“…Most of the definitions articulated in included studies were with emphasis on the newborn infant with or without clothes, newborn infant position on the mother’s chest or abdomen and duration of infant-mother SSC. Four studies defined SSC as the placing of the naked baby on the mother’s chest or abdomen [ 14 , 16 , 18 , 19 ], whereas another study allowed the baby to wear cap, diaper and socks [ 13 ]. Two studies mentioned in their definition of SSC that both the mother and the infant need to be covered with a warm blanket or dry towel to stabilise the infant [ 17 , 18 ] Four studies explained in their definitions of SSC, that the newborn infant’s position should be placed prone on the mother’s bare chest or abdomen [ 16 , 18 20 ].…”

“…During early nipple stimulation, rapid release of prolactin and oxytocin aids in initiating milk production and contraction of uterus (Buckley, ; Power & Schulkin, ). Early initiation helps babies imprint on their mother's milk, whereby other babies can remember the taste, smell, and feel associated with breastfeeding (Kim, ). Understanding factors that possibly influence early breastfeeding initiation is significant for design and delivers more effective strategies, because early breastfeeding initiation is a consistently significant predictor of longer exclusive breastfeeding duration (NEOVITA Study Group, ; Patel et al, ).…”
