Factors Shaping Cow’s Milk Production in the EU

Abstract: The milk market in the European Union (EU) is adjusting rapidly to the removal of dairy quotas. The most important changes include increased milk yield per cow, increased total milk production, decreased number of cows, and the decreased milk consumption. The main aim of the paper is to examine the milk production changes in the EU. We investigated the dynamics of changes in farm milk production during the period from 1998–2017 in the EU. Moreover, we investigated the impact of the removal of quotas on the pro… Show more

“…The research concerned the raw milk market. It was chosen purposefully because of: The significant position of the milk sector in the Polish agribusiness and in the EU [8,9], very low transport and storage related raw material vulnerability, everyday production and necessity of frequent milk supplies to processing plants [42], numerous transformations in the sector including, inter alia, changes in spatial concentration of production and important changes in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) concerning, inter alia, milk quotas. [43].…”

“…Farms with more cows are in the best position [51]. Bórawski et al investigated the impact of the removal of quotas on the production of milk on farms in Poland and the EU [8]. The number of dairy holdings in Poland has decreased, but it is still high.…”

“…The agri-food trade balance has increased for most of the newer members of the EU over time. Integration has resulted in higher food consumption and food exports (Bórawski et al, 2020). The EU had improved the balance of agri-food products trade with outside countries with imports increasing only 98,4% while exports increased by 146,3%.…”

“…The lowest economic stability of dairy farms was characterized by dairy farms from Bulgaria, Croatia, Poland, Romania and Slovenia. Dairy farms in these countries encounter problems in development including small possibility to increase farm area and dairy herd, lower cow's yields and fertility (Borawski et al, 2020). Romania (4), Lithuania (11), Croatia (13), Bulgaria (14), Austria and Poland (both 18) had the fewest number of cows in dairy farms in 2016.…”

“…One of the most important problem of milk production is decreased fertility. It is the results of rising production and larger numbers of animals per worker (Borawski et al, 2020). The profitability of dairy farms can be improved by new technologies, better nutrition, herd management and advances in genetics (Stelwagen et al, 2013).…”
