“…Examination of a series of seven aerial photographs from 1956 to 2006 (S&ME, Inc., 2010) indicates that the current mix of forest and grass land cover is representative of the land cover since 1956, and that erosion was initiated in the mid-1980s. Land use prior to 2010 was primarily cattle grazing, which can trigger gully erosion (Munoz-Robles et al, 2010;Valentin et al, 2005) when the soil is compacted, the root mat is damaged, and the critical shear stress necessary for channel initiation is reduced (Prosser et al, 1995: Trimble andMendel, 1995). Damage from cattle grazing may take from years to decades to manifest into gullies (Trimble and Mendel, 1995), and historical land use and field observation at the study site suggests that damage to the root mat encourages overland flow to concentrate in rills that develop into permanent gullies.…”

“…The applicability of the MIHS algorithm and the red band to map ground cover in other areas will depend on the nature of the images used and the type of vegetation/ground cover to be evaluated. Significant relationships between ground cover and the Quickbird red band were found by Bastin et al (2007) and by Muñoz-Robles et al (2010) who used the red band of IKONOS data to estimate ground cover in semi-arid Australia. This reinforces the utility of the red band for mapping ground cover with high resolution imagery.…”

“…(2008), (2) Wilson et al (2008), (3) Bouchnak et al (2009), (4) Tims, everett, Fifield, hancock, and Bartley (2010), (5) Gully erosion is a worldwide problem . It has been reported in a variety of climate zones, such as humid zone (Vanwalleghem, Poesen, Nachtergaele, & Verstraeten, 2005;Wilson, Shields, Bingner, Reid-Rhoades, & DiCarlo, 2008), semi-humid zone (Wu et al, 2008;Zucca, Canu, & Della Peruta, 2006), semi-arid zone (Bouchnak, Felfoul, Boussema, & Snane, 2009;Muñoz-Robles et al, 2010;Wilkinson, Hancock, Bartley, Hawdon, & Keen, 2013) and arid zone (Samani et al, 2009). Gully erosion was also reported in both croplands (Achten et al, 2008;Vanwalleghem et al, 2005;Wu & Cheng, 2005) and non-croplands (Dong et al, 2013;Katz, Daniels, & Ryan, 2014;Vandekerckhove et al, 2000;Zucca et al, 2006).…”
