Factors related to exclusive breastfeeding in Thai adolescent mothers: Concept mapping approach

Abstract: The advantages of exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months are well-known.Unfortunately, adolescent mothers have lower rates of breastfeeding exclusivity and shorter duration of breastfeeding. There is limited evidence regarding exclusive breastfeeding determinants in adolescent mothers. The purpose of this study was to obtain adolescent mother-generated factors related to exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months. A mixed-methods design was conducted through concept mapping. Thirty adolescent mothers aged 15-… Show more

“…(in Newman & Williamson, 2018) Subtheme 1.1: Significant others' views of infant feeding preferences influenced breastfeeding behaviours. Some women perceived pressure from friends and family to feed according to their friends' and families' preferences (i.e., subjective norms), which often undermined the breastfeeding experience for women (Nuampa et al, 2018;Took et al, 2009;Rempel, 2004). In most instances, breastfeeding was favoured but, in some cases, breastfeeding was not approved of (Bai et al, 2009).…”

“…When positive emotions were reported/measured, women were more likely to have initiated breastfeeding and have a longer duration of breastfeeding behaviour. Mothers experienced the highest personal satisfaction when their current feeding method aligned with their infant feeding intentions (Symon et al, 2013) and when they felt happiness and enjoyment regarding their breastfeeding behaviour (Nuampa et al, 2018). For those who intended to breastfeed and then initiated breastfeeding, perseverance was reported as being key.…”

“…Furthermore, studies also demonstrate that socio-demographic disadvantage is a major driver of adolescent motherhood who struggles with severe problems in poor countries that require greater public policy attention and intervention [1,4,6,[9][10][11]. Concerning socio-demographic and economic inequalities among adolescents also play a big part in early adolescent motherhood; at the same time, adolescent girls lack sufficient knowledge, practices, and interventions from the government and non-governmental organizations in dealing with the several infant and mothers' health-related issues [2,12]. Therefore, in order to accelerate the progress towards meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on health and well-being of adolescent girls, a targeted approach is required where adolescent girls can receive a wide range of information related to sexual and reproductive health, infant breastfeeding, and child nutrition.…”
