“…There is a long and rich history of home visiting by nurses for over a hundred and fifty years in Europe and the United States (Wald, 1915; Buhler‐Wilkerson, 1993). One of the earliest randomized trials to show the promise of home visiting by nurses was published by Gutelius and colleagues in the early 1970s (Gutelius et al, 1972) in which she found that a program of prenatal and infancy home visiting for teen mothers bearing first children augmented by mobile pediatric care produced significant impacts on children's injuries and behavior, and maternal life‐course (Gutelius et al, 1972; Gutelius & Kirsch, 1975). In the past decade, a number of articles on nurse home visiting have been reported that reveal the potential of this method of service delivery when the right program methods and content are incorporated in the clinical model.…”

“…Infant Stimulation Program Gutelius and Kirsch (1975) attributed the significant difference in IQ scores between two groups of infants in an infant stimulation program to the differing treatment received by mothers of each group. Mothers of the infant group with higher scores received more information and direct advice on infant stimulation and had more frequent contacts and friendly relations with the staff than did mothers of the other group.…”
