Factors predictive of positive response to steroid therapy in simple bone cysts: an old trick that still works

Abstract: Purpose The aim of the study was to identify clinical, demographic and radiological factors predicting a positive response to steroid treatment in simple bone cysts (SBCs). Methods A retrospective study was conducted on 62 patients. The mean follow-up period was 9.2 years after the final steroid injection. Recurrences were defined according to Neer's scale as modified by Chang et al.. To identify predictive factors, the group of patients who positively responded to treatment (Neer stages I and II, n=39, 62.9 %… Show more

“…Recent publications have revived this "old trick", with its simplicity, low cost and acceptable success rate. In case of incomplete response to a first injection, treatment is usually repeated once or twice [2,3,12,15,16].…”

“…However high recurrence risk after sur-gery and complications linked to surgery were reported (11,12) . To reduce these complications many methods were described (13)(14)(15)(16)(17) . These include injections (steroid, autogenous bone marrow, demineralized bone matrix), multiple drilling and flexible intramedullary nailing (18)(19)(20) .…”

“…The purpose of treatment of SBC is to restore bone strength, cortical thickness, and obliteration of the cyst, as well as to prevent all possible complications, and prolonged restriction of physical activity [1,9,10]. The appropriate treatment, however, remains uncertain, and a wide spectrum of treatment modalities have been proposed ranging from observation to subtotal resection [1].…”
