Factors predicting quality of life and societal participation after survival of a cardiac arrest: A prognostic longitudinal cohort study

Abstract: This study identified prognostic factors of QOL and societal participation one year after survival of cardiac arrest. Screening of these factors in early stages can identify those survivors with possibly unfavourable QOL at one year post cardiac arrest. For those survivors, preventive and targeted interventions may be offered.

“…There is a lack of follow-up with neuropsychological instruments examining several cognitive domains. Earlier studies on cognition after OHCA have either included a smaller number of participants (less than 50), or investigated more patients (100-300) with elementary cognitive assessments or fewer cognitive domains [10,17,19].…”

“…35 Research indicates that individuals who received holistic care had an increased physical activity level, returned to work to a greater extent and reported a higher QOL. 36 A holistic care approach improves the partnership between nurses, other health professionals and their patients, which leads to an improved patient experience of care.…”

“…Often, quantitative research is used to explore QOL using validated tools 6 and survivors report an acceptable QOL. 7 , 11 In comparison, qualitative explorations of the phenomena of surviving CA are few. 6 Qualitative research gives the participant an opportunity to express their views without the constraint of questionnaires and allows depth of experience to come to light that is not exposed in quantitative research.…”

“…[216][217][218][219][220] However, there are many cases where adequate treatment cannot be provided because it is not always recognized by the medical staff. [221][222][223] Therefore, we recommend structured assessment for anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and fatigue for cardiac arrest survivors so that psychological problems that are common to survivors after a cardiac arrest can be identified without missing them and appropriate treatment can be provided to them to improve their long-term prognosis.…”
