Factors Predicting Operating Room Time in Ureteroscopy and Ureterorenoscopy

Abstract: Backgrounds/Aims: Operation room (OR) time is of great value affecting surgical outcome, complications and the daily surgical program with financial implications. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 570 consecutive patients submitted to ureteroscopy or ureterorenoscopy for the treatment of ureteral or renal stones. Demographic parameters, patient's stones characteristics, type of ureteroscope, surgeon experience and surgical theater characteristics were analyzed. OR time was calculated from the initiation of… Show more

“…For instance, Katafigiotis et al . [ 36 ] demonstrated that factors such as stone number, size, density, instrument type, surgeon experience, operating room setup, and prior nephrostomy tube use can independently affect operating time in RIRS. Given the diverse array of factors influencing this parameter, the observed high heterogeneity in the study, which continued even after subgroup studies, is not surprising.…”

“…Indeed, operation time with RIRS can depend on several variables. In a recent study, Katafigiotis et al ( 36 ) have shown that stone number, dimension, density, the type of instrument, surgeon experience, type of operating room, and use of prior nephrostomy tube are independent factors that can influence operating time with RIRS. Considering a wide-ranging of factors influencing operating time, it was not surprising to note the high heterogeneity in the meta-analysis which persisted even after subgroup analyses.…”

“…A well-trained team inside the operation theatre is important to deliver efficient and safe FURS. 44 The operating surgeon, assistant surgeon, anaesthesiologist, surgical tech technician, circulating nurse, and occasionally- a medical device company representative, help the surgeon during the operation. But above all, good communication between the team is the key element in performing a flawless procedure.…”
