Factors Preceding Relapse of Ulcerative Colitis

Abstract: The effect of intercurrent diarrhoea on relapse of ulcerative colitis was investigated. Diarrhoea resulting from travel abroad, gastroenteritis or antibiotic usage resulted in an approximately 50% relapse rate. With regard to colonoscopy and barium enema, only the latter was followed by relapse and this may reflect differences in the preparation for the procedure.

“…In this regard, the investigation of seasonal cluster in CUC is very timely and necessary [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. Monthly clustering patterns in flares of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been previously reported [9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. However, very few studies have investigated seasonal variability, and then only in Western populations [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8].…”

“…Bowel infections often lead to a relapse of colitis and patients are well advised to avoid holidays in places where travellers' diarrhoea is common (Isgar, Harman and Whorwell, 1983). Prophylactic treatment with co-trimoxazole 2 tablets daily, seems well justified for a colitic who needs to travel in such areas (Dupont et al, 1983).…”

“…Concurrent infection in colitic patients can complicate differential diagnosis, and pa tient management can be problematic [8], Many factors have been implicated in pre cipitating relapse of chronic ulcerative colitis although conclusions from different studies are often conflicting. Of particular interest in a microbiological context is the not infre quent observation that a relatively trivial in fection immediately preceeds relapse, most commonly an upper respiratory tract infec tion [9][10][11][12][13] or gastroenteritis [II]. These cor relations are supported by other, associated, risk factors such as recent foreign travel [11].…”
