Factors influencing work disability in psoriatic arthritis: first results from a large UK multicentre study

Abstract: Reduced effectiveness at work was associated with measures of disease activity, whereas unemployment, considered the endpoint of WD, was associated with employer factors, age and disease duration. A longitudinal study is under way to determine whether treatment to reduce disease activity ameliorates WD in the real-world setting.

“…At present, close monitoring and preventive measures for various comorbidities including, but not restricted to, cardiovascular diseases should be undertaken when dealing with patients with PsA in the clinic 28 29. Moreover, early diagnosis and sufficient and aggressive treatment, including antitumour necrosis factor therapy, seems to have an impact on the risk for developing work disability and thus diminishing the burden of disease from a patient's perspective and societal perspective 10 24 30. It is evident from this study that the management of the overall burden of disease in patients with PsA is indeed needed and that a successful holistic handling of patients' health may have an impact on both a personal and societal level.…”

“…2 PsA patients have an increased burden of disease, impairment in quality of life, and diminished functional capacity, all reflected in a lower general health state. 4,11,12 Overall, this results in great physical, psychological, and ultimately economic burden of the disease to the individual and society. 13 There is therefore a need to establish a clinical indicator to detect risk and ensure early diagnosis of PsA.…”

“…43 There are high levels of unemployment and loss of productivity that may be more readily reversible with early intervention. 44 The availability of more effective treatments with several also in the pipeline underscores the compelling case for early intervention. Individuals with psoriasis who seem to be at greatest risk are those who are obese, have nail disease, and carry the HLA-B27 allele.…”
