Factors Influencing Triacetone Triperoxide (TATP) and Diacetone Diperoxide (DADP) Formation: Part 2

Abstract: A comprehensive mechanistic study regarding acetone peroxides reveals that water has a profound effect on the formation of the solid cyclic peroxides, TATP and DADP. The identification and rate of occurrence of reaction intermediates as well as compositions of the final products offer explanation for previously reported results indicating that acid type and hydrogen peroxide concentration affect the acid catalyzed reaction between acetone and hydrogen peroxide. A kinetics study of the decomposition of TATP rev… Show more

“…Although it is difficult to fully explain the observed shifts in the IRMS and GC‐IRMS data from the chemical reactions and associated isotope chemistry, this work does provide clear evidence to support the postulated reaction mechanism for the acid‐catalyzed synthesis of TATP from acetone and hydrogen peroxide . The established correlations or lack thereof between isotopic ratio values of TATP and its precursors given in Figs and are in agreement with the reaction mechanism depicted in Fig.…”

“…Figure shows the postulated reaction mechanism of TATP formation from acetone and hydrogen peroxide. The selection criteria for acetone samples were based on the carbon and hydrogen isotopic compositions, as the reaction mechanism suggests that acetone is the donor of both carbon and hydrogen in the formation of TATP . For hydrogen peroxide, the selection criteria were based on the oxygen isotopic compositions, as hydrogen peroxide is suggested to be the donor of oxygen in the formation of TATP.…”

“…26 Caution : TATP and DADP are shock-, friction-, heat-, and spark-sensitive high explosives and can decompose violently in strong acid. 2629 Peroxide 7 was prepared from the corresponding tertiary bromide following a reported procedure; 2b peroxide 8 was available through methylation of the known tertiary hydroperoxide. 30…”

“…It had also been noted that it was dangerous to treat bisperoxide 71 with nitric acid (Figure b) . Although the controlled acid‐mediated decomposition of TATP showed no indications for a radical mechanism, it is at present unclear whether the explosive decomposition by acid involves alkenyl peroxides.…”
