Purpose Construction projects require a range of documents (e.g. drawings and specifications) prepared by built environment professionals. In recent years, there has been a perception amongst professionals that quality of documentation has declined. “Low” professional fees were cited as one of the reasons for poor quality documentation. However, most studies on the topic contained inappropriate methodologies. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to develop a conceptual methodology to comprehensively examine the relationship between fees and professional service output quality. Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted to evaluate the limitations of previous methodologies and identify variables in the relationship between fees and quality of professional service outputs. Findings from the SLR were used to develop a conceptual methodology to investigate the relationship between fees and quality of professional service outputs. Findings Based on a frequency analysis of factors in the construction literature, the three main variables influencing professional service output quality were fees, coordination and amount of time available for project tasks. The SLR and shortcomings in previous studies informed the development of a conceptual methodology to examine the relationship between fees and professional service output quality. Practical implications The conceptual methodology will assist in comprehensively investigating the effect of fees on the quality of professional service outputs. This is particularly relevant in countries where clients procure built environment professional services based on the lowest fee tendered but are concerned about quality. The methodology can establish how and to what extent “low” fees impact on professional service output quality. Industry professionals can also use variables identified in this paper to mitigate quality-related risks when producing professional service outputs. Originality/value This paper adds to the body of knowledge by identifying variables in the relationship between fees and professional service output quality. The identified variables can be monitored and controlled by researchers during future investigations. Additionally, a conceptual methodology was proposed to assist researchers to determine the effect of fees on professional service output quality. The flexibility of the conceptual methodology enables it to comprehensively investigate other key variables (apart from fees) impacting on professional service output quality.

Architects must have an adequate and relevant understanding of Prevention through Design (PtD) to execute essential design decisions during the early design stage.The understanding of PtD as a proactive safety intervention throughout the design process has been supported in various studies, but there has been little research incorporatingPtDin design practices by the architectandprovisionalarchitectural safety design parameter on the Occupational Safety andHealth (OSH)matters, thus, leadingto the gap in this study.ConsideringthePtD concept as part of the sustainablestrategy into thearchitecturalearly design stages may significantly enhance the building's life cycle and safety performance, particularly during the operational and maintenance phase of the buildingprojects. Therefore, thesystematicreview was motivated by the belief that the early architectural design stage is one of the key factors improving safety performance in the practice of PtD.This review begins by analysing literature from 2011 to 2021 with relevant keywords related to the architectural design aspect that contributes to building safety performance, followed by characterising the safety aspect atthe early architectural design stage. The findings were identified and clustered into the following five categoriesof the architectural design parameters: 1) Site planning, 2) Space Planning, 3) Building envelope, 4) Design for Visibility, and 5) Environmental DesignParameters. This finding is hope to be able to providean architectural frame of reference on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) matters, allowing future researchers and practitioners to addresssustainable aspectof safety in the early architectural design practicesof PtD while optimising building safety performance across the building life cycle projects.

Atribut fisik merupakan salah satu elemen yang signifikan dalam pembangunan ruang terbuka publik, yang mana merupakan wujud pemenuhan kebutuhan masyarakat serta sebagai atraksi yang dapat menjadi daya tarik bagi masyarakat untuk berkumpul di ruang terbuka. Keberadaan atribut fisik mempengaruhi persepsi masyarakat terhadap ruang terbuka publik. Kesuksesan ruang terbuka publik sangat dipengaruhi oleh atribut fisiknya. Lapangan Merdeka merupakan salah satu ruang terbuka publik yang ada di pusat kota Medan yang telah mengalami perubahan fungsi ruang yang berdampak pada atribut fisiknya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan persepsi masyarakat terhadap perubahan atribut fisik yang terjadi di Lapangan Merdeka. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan cara metode campuran, dengan mengumpulkan data sekunder dan primer, dimana data primer yang dikumpulkan berupa wawancara mendalam, dan kuesioner. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perubahan atribut fisik Lapangan Merdeka meningkatkan perekonomian masyarakat sekitar. Meski demikian, keberadaan bangunan permanen perlu direncanakan ulang.
