Factors influencing the existence of the homogeneous dielectric barrier discharge in air at atmospheric pressure

Abstract: The characteristics of homogeneous discharge are studied and compared with those of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) by measuring their electrical discharge parameters and observing their light-emission phenomena. Several factors, including the voltage amplitude, gap distance, electrode configuration and barrier thickness, are experimentally studied to see their effects on the transition of the homogeneous discharge from the stable mode to the unstable mode. The results show that the homogeneous discharge ex… Show more

“…For the generation of homogeneous volume DBDs at atmospheric pressure the use of noble gasses or pure nitrogen is necessary -as in the case of e.g. APGD or APTD [36][37][38][39]. Contrary to the previously mentioned DBD configurations the DCSBD is capable of generating a macroscopically uniform plasma layer with high power density and energetic efficiency when operated in air [40,41].…”

“…8 shows the voltage dependence of the discharge with the two electrode configurations at different Ar gas fl ow rates, in which the region sandwiched by the curves marked as (a) and (b) [or (c)] specifies the voltage range for obtaining a homogeneous discharge. Like the study of glow discharge at air with the 50-Hz power supply excitation [28], a critical voltage that determines the upper limit voltage value of sustaining a stable glow discharge is introduced to study the homogeneous DBD in Ar in this paper. It can be seen that the discharge ignition voltage increases a little with the increasing of the gas flow.…”

“…The discharge power p d in generating microdischarges is given by the following [1], [7], [18], [20], [21], taking into account that there are two capacitors connected in series with the air-gap capacitance C g , i.e., equivalent pellet capacitance C p and the dielectric barrier capacitance C d :…”

“…In addition, plasma has attracted considerable interest and has been widely used for ozone synthesis, ultraviolet excimer lamps, plasma display panels, surface modification, and biomedical application for the past twenty years [7]. Nonthermal plasmas under atmospheric pressure generated by DBDs have been extensively studied and widely used for various industrial applications, owing to the easy formation of stable plasmas and its scalability, effectiveness, and low operational cost [8]- [10].…”
