Factors influencing the decision to donate: racial and ethnic comparisons

Abstract: Recruitment and retention programs should build on people's sense of social responsibility. Direct requests to donate are particularly effective motivators. Of a variety of incentives evaluated, offering more comprehensive health screens may motivate many donors, especially Black and Hispanic donors.

“…Among all donors, the most important motivation factor found in our study was altruism, agreeing with results from studies conducted in other countries that most donors have the desire to help someone and to do something important for society (Glynn et al 2002;Glynn et al 2006;Oborne et al 1978). As concluded by other authors most blood donors appear to have high levels of primary social responsibility, commonly thought to be a strong motivator for donation, although it may not be related to donation frequency (Steele et al 2007).…”

“…Although the frequency of admitted test-seekers was the same between volunteer and replacement donors, test-seekers were more likely to be exposed to a sexually transmitted disease as indicated by higher HSV-2 seropositivity (Goncalez et al 2006). Motivations to donate blood may therefore be linked to the risk of transfusiontransmissible infections and efforts to achieve a blood supply based on regular, repeat donors require information on the motivations related to blood donation (Belda Suárez et al 2004;Glynn et al 2002;Glynn et al 2006;Hollingsworth and Wildmant 2004;Hupfer et al 2005;Oborne et al 1978;Rapport and Maggs 2002).…”

“…According to these authors, African Americans are more prone to give blood if they are certain that it will be used for transfusions within their own communities. Glynn et al (2006) suggest that among Blacks, the main motivations for giving blood in the United States were social responsibility, receiving a request to give blood, and getting a health check. Schreiber et al (2006), Hollingsworth and Wildman (2004), as well as Nguyen et al (2008), agree that a higher than average number of Black donors complain about the way they are received at blood drives.…”

“…Kao prepreke za dobrovoljno davalaštvo se u literaturi najčešće navode strah od igle i nedostatak entuzijazma da se poseti Služba za transfuziju krvi 12,13 . Ovi rezultati su u skladu sa našom studijom koja je pokazala da je najčešća nelagodnost koju ispitanici vezuju za doniranje krvi, upravo ubod igle.…”
