1. In the Mexican Caribbean, marine protected areas have been established to tackle marine ecosystem degradation caused by the coastal development that started in Cancún in the 1970s and extended south to the border with Belize in the 1990s.It is crucial to assess their effectiveness for conservation of the reef ecosystem, but also the perception of stakeholders, because the objective would be unattainable without their participation.2. This study evaluated the conservation status and the management effectiveness of National Park Xcalak Reefs (PNAX), in the southernmost Mexican Caribbean. In addition to interviewing local stakeholders to recognize issues related to the administration and functioning of PNAX, four zones with different use restrictions inside the park were evaluated, using ecological indicators (diversity and abundance of fishes, coral diversity and cover, and macroalgal cover) and ecological knowledge by interviewing local stakeholders, mostly fishers and conservation personnel.3. The results suggest that one of the restricted-use zones is in good condition, with a higher abundance of fishes and coral cover, and a lower cover of fleshy macroalgae and turf, compared with the other zones in the protected area. On the other hand, the core area presents bad indicators, such as a higher macroalgal cover and lower abundance of fishes, suggesting poor management or insufficient enforcement.4. Although mistrust and lack of communication between fishers and conservation authorities may limit the achievement of conservation goals, some programmes involving active participation of local people, for example lionfish culling and coastal vegetation restoration, have had a good impact on the coral reef community.

Most coral reef ecosystems with high coverage of living coral would escalate the reef fish abundance and species richness as one of the correlatable communities to the coral reef. However, reef fish could only utilize one of the coral reef ecosystems to provide to the reef fish community that still withstand and adapt to those conditions. This study aims to assess the coral reef ecosystem quality on Mandangin Islands and the correlation between the benthic substrate to the reef fish structure. Coral reef ecosystem was assessed using Line Intercept Transect and Underwater Visual Census. A linear model or regression analysis was built to identify the key predictors driving factor in the ecosystem. Rock, Sand, and Rubble are the highest benthic substrate around Mandangin Islands. Reef fish have a high abundance along the observation site with exhaustive trophic level, high major functional group, broad bodied size with high abundance small to moderate bodied-size. Rock has a positive correlation to reef fish abundance; Sand has possibilities to escalate species richness, whereas live coral negatively correlates to reef fish. Historically Mandangin Islands contained a healthy coral reef ecosystem that degraded after years, yet reef fish withstand and adapt to the Mandangin Islands’ degraded coral reef ecosystems. Rock is coral that loses several of its function, especially as direct nourishment. This study showed that reef fish should be considered as one of the primary data to strengthen the decision-making of Integrated Coastal Management and Oil Spill Contingency Plans by the Oil and Gas Company.

The territorial waters of Pasumpahan Island contain tourism and fishing activities which are assumed to affect the coral reef ecosystem and reef fish communities in the area. Monitoring the development of coral reef fish resources is an important approach to detect changes. This study aims to analyze the abundance, the diversity and the biomass of reef fish in the waters of Pasumpahan Island, Padang City. This research was conducted in March 2022 in 5 (five) different research locations with The Underwater Visual Census (UVC) as the data collection method. The units of analysis in monitoring changes are 7 families of carnivorous and herbivorous reef fish, such as Serranidae, Lutjanidae, Lethrinidae, Haemulidae, Acanthuridae, Scaridae, Siganidae and 1 obligate coral tribe (Chaetodontidae). The results of this study indicated that the highest abundance of reef fish found came from the herbivore group with an abundance value of 3,171 individuals/hectare at station 3, the highest abundance of Corallivor groups was found at station 2 with an abundance value of 1,171 individuals/hectare and the highest abundance of carnivore groups was found at station 2 with an abundance value of 171 individuals/hectare. The diversity of reef fish found at the study site is in the low category with an H' value <2.30. Meanwhile, the biomass of reef fish in the waters of Pasumpahan Island is in the low category with a biomass value of <300 kg/hectare.
