Factors influencing the abundance of Japanese encephalitis vectors in ricefields in India – II. Biotic

Abstract: The relationship of insect predators and phytoplankton with the abundance of Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles, Cx. vishnui Theobald and Cx. pseudovishnui Colless mosquito larvae and pupae (Diptera: Culicidae) in ricefields was investigated during three rice growing seasons. Notonectids were the most abundant insect predators, whereas diatoms dominated among phytoplankton. Multiple regression analysis showed that the occurrence of notonectids (both nymphs and adults) was negatively associated with larval abundance… Show more

“…The mosquitoes observed in the present instance exhibit a similarity with the findings of earlier studies in India (Kant et al 1998;Sunish & Reuben 2002;Sunish et al 2006) or elsewhere (Muturi et al 2008;Stoops et al 2008;Lytra & Emmanouel 2014;Ohba et al 2013Ohba et al , 2015 though the species richness remained low. This may possibly due to the sampling error or due to the restricted space included in the sampling strategy.…”

“…Empirical observations on the rice field mosquitoes in India and countries where paddy rice cultivation is a normal practice, the abundance of Anopheline and Culicine mosquitoes are guided by the environmental factors and the habitat permanence of the cultivable lands (Kant et al 1992(Kant et al , 1998Sunish & Reuben 2002;Banerjee & Chandra 2004;Keiser & al. 2005;Sunish et al 2006;Ohba et al 2013Ohba et al , 2015Lytra & Emmanouel 2014) cial determinant for the future abundance and dominance.…”

“…Many mosquito larvae, including those of C. pipiens, are natural prey items for several backswimmer species, and thus share an evolutionary history with them (e.g. Sunish & Reuben, 2002;Chesson, 1984;Blaustein, 1998;Mogi et al, 1999). It is thus not surprising that upon a backswimmer attack, mosquitoes try most of the time to escape by becoming motionless, although other strategies are also occasionally observed (such as wriggling away) (Scott & Murdoch, 1983 ;Sih, 1979).…”
