Factors influencing self‐management in patients with type 2 diabetes: a quantitative systematic review protocol

Abstract: An initial summary will be made by tabulating the data; the review will be reported in a narrative style and be developed according to the PRISMA guidelines. The protocol for the systematic review will allow us to identify, among the factors influencing self-management in people with Type II diabetes, the personal characteristics most relevant to the factors of motivation and empowerment. In addition, the systematic review will also identify an appropriate self-management model.

“…It was reported that patients with diabetes do not have optimal glycaemic control; in 2006, only 26Á8% of the T2DM patients had glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) lower than 6Á5% (Pan et al 2009). Many complications of T2DM can be under controlled when rigorous diabetes self-management activities are regularly performed (Bagnasco et al 2014). However, it is not easy for T2DM patients to implement self-management on a daily basis.…”

“…To manage type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), people need tailored information from diabetes specialist nurses, as well as sufficient information processing skills associated with health literacy (HL) (see e.g., Bagnasco et al, 2014;Bohanny et al, 2013). Considering people's HL as a mediator for effective communication with healthcare professionals (Ishikawa & Kiuchi, 2010;Rudd, Rosenfeld, & Simonds, 2012), it becomes clear that low HL is a barrier to optimal management of T2DM (Bohanny et al, 2013;Schillinger et al, 2002).…”

“…Self-management has been universally defined as a person's ability to manage treatment, symptoms and dramatic lifestyle changes (Bagnasco et al, 2013). In the context of T2DM, the management of one's chronic disorder plays a significant role requiring patient-driven actions (Yamashita et al, 2011).…”
