Purpose: This study was conducted to identify influencing factors in a health promotion model that explains and predicts health promoting behavior in obese middle-aged women.Methods: Based on Pender’s health promotion model, a hypothetical model was constructed with nine factors (emotional eating, obesity stress, perceived benefits of action, perceived barriers to action, perceived self-efficacy, activity-related affect, social support, commitment to a plan of action, and health promoting behavior). The participants were 215 obese middle-aged women who visited one of three health check-up centers in Seoul, Incheon, or Gyeonggi Province to receive health check-ups through the National Health Insurance Corporation. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire.Results: In the final research model, the factors that had a direct impact on health promoting behavior of obese middle-aged women were obesity stress (β=-.17, p=.001), perceived self-efficacy (β=.34, p<.001), activity-related affect (β=.22, p<.001), commitment to a plan of action (β=.34, p<.001). The explanatory power was 51.3%.Conclusion: This study found that a higher level of engagement in health promoting behavior was associated with lower obesity stress, higher perceived self-efficacy, better activity-related affect, and a higher commitment to a plan of action. These results may be used as a basis for the development of a nursing intervention program to improve health promoting behavior in obese middle-aged women.

Effectiveness of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy Program Utilizing Literature for Mental Health of Menopausal Women

Background: This study aims to investigate the effects of the REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy) program using literatures on the self-esteem, ego-resilience, perceived stress, body image, depression, state anger, anger expression, and aging anxiety on the mental health of menopausal women. Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study of non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Prior to the study, four menopausal women were selected for a pilot study, and the four-session program was practiced. Based on the results, the REBT program utilizing literature for the mental health of menopausal women was conducted in the public cultural center in C city, Chungnam, semiweekly, during 90∼120 minutes per session, over 10 sessions for five weeks, from February to April 2018. The subjects were 48 menopausal women aged 45∼60 years. Of these, 24 subjects in the experimental group, and 24 subjects in the control group were intentionally sampled. The collected data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, χ 2 -test, independent t-test, and paired t-test using SPSS 21.0. Results: There were statistically significant differences in self-esteem, ego-resilience, body image, depression, state anger, anger expression, and aging anxiety between the two groups. Conclusions: The results confirmed that the REBT program utilizing literature for mental health of menopausal women improved the self-esteem and ego-resilience of women and was effective in reducing perceived stress, negative body image, depression, state anger, anger expression, and aging anxiety.

The relationship between psychological distress and the health-related quality of life of middle-aged Korean females: A serial mediation model

Background This study aimed to provide primary data for developing an intervention program to improve the health-related quality of life of middle-aged females. This study examined the effects of psychological distress, depression, and emotional eating behaviors on the health-related quality of life of middle-aged Korean females. Methods Middle-aged females between 35 and 64 years old, from July 22 to August 10, 2021, were included in this study. The mediating effect of depression and emotional eating behaviors on the relationship between psychological distress and health-related quality of life was investigated. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 325 subjects. Researchers conducted questionnaires measuring general health, depression, emotional eating behavior, and health-related quality of life. Results The findings of this study demonstrated a correlation between the severity of a person’s depression and the degree of their psychological distress, indicating that severe depression was associated with negative emotions, which increased emotional eating behavior. Additionally, more severe depression indicated a lower health-related quality of life. Higher psychological distress was associated with increased levels of emotional eating behaviors and lower health-related quality of life. The total and direct effects of psychological distress on the health-related quality of life were statistically significant. Conclusions These findings suggest that evidence-based intervention programs that alleviate emotional health problems, such as psychological distress and depression in middle-aged females, are crucial. Moreover, nurses help implement evidence-based intervention programs that could assess potential symptoms of psychological distress, depression, and emotional eating behaviors and develop effective treatment strategies to improve the health-related quality of life. Based on the results of this study, when developing a health promotion program that improves the health-related quality of life of middle-aged females, a nursing intervention plan that alleviates emotional health problems, such as psychological distress and depression in middle-aged women, should be prepared.
